ことわざ◆諺◆百科 (Proverbs Collection)
This is a website that introduces and explains, in simple terms, proverbs and idiomatic phrases which have been passed down through the ages.
- You can look up Japanese proverbs and idioms.
- Items can be looked up via Japanese 50-syllabary index.
- Explanations are simple, and in them you are told how to read and use each phrase.
- The display is Japanese only (as the website is aimed at native Japanese speakers).
On the top page there is an index arranged in Japanese-syllabary order.
If you want to know the meaning or use of a particular proverb/idiom, you need to know how the very first bit of the phrase is read in Japanese in order to search using the index.
There is no function to look up a phrase from its meaning, or by typing in kanji, or by using a free word search. Therefore, you have to check the reading before you can click on the kana in the index that corresponds to the very first syllable.
Click on the 'あ' kana and 115 proverbs are shown.
We tried clicking on '愛想もこそも尽き果てる'. (Meaning: to be absolutely fed up/disgusted)
The reading, meaning and how the phrase is used are displayed for us.
When you want to return to the top page, click on 'トップページ' (shown in the red frame, below). If you want to look up a phrase beginning with a different syllable, search via the menu on the left side of the screen.
If you want to see a list of all the proverbs/idioms beginning with 'あ', scroll to the bottom of the screen and you'll find the 'あ'-list is displayed there, so there's no need to return to the previous screen.
"Use proverbs in an enterprising way and you'll find that your speech and written sentences will be enriched with a certain liveliness and energy. We hope people be able to make use of this site for various purposes."
For Japanese learners who wish to aim for a level above and want to be able to use more vivid descriptions in their spoken and written language, as the designers mention in the description above, this just might be a very useful website.
