Learn Japanese from the News

Use the news to learn Japanese and practice conversing about the content.

Nine languages are supported.

Languages supported are English, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese, but content may differ depending on the language.

Here, let's introduce the English version.

  • It starts with a simple Japanese video.
  • The script is translated, words and expressions are explained in English, and so you can easily check your understanding.
  • There are short skits based on the news articles followed by worksheets about them.
  • Links to NHK World TV broadcasts as well as radio, and easy Japanese news sites are provided for review.

"Learn Japanese from the News" is part of NHK WORLD-JAPAN content.
The most recent articles are at the top.

When you click on the article you want to read, the following tabs will appear at the top of the page to take you to the contents: News Title, Introduction, News Clip, Script, Words & Expressions, Small Talk (Dialogue), Small Talk (Drill), and Program (multilingual).

You can select your language from the Learn Japanese page.

In News Title and Introduction, you can switch between Kanji, Hiragana, Romaji, and English.
The Introduction indicates what you want to learn (Can-do) from the news article.
The News Clip shows a video in simple Japanese, and you can adjust the speed from 0.75 to 2x.

The Script is in segments of one or two sentences with audio, translation, and explanations of words and expressions in English.

Words & Expressions can be switched between Japanese and English so you can practice by checking back and forth.

Small Talk includes short office dialogues with audio, translation, and explanations of words and expressions in English.You can also turn off the Japanese captions.

Drill is a worksheet with three multiple choice questions about the Small Talk content. It also comes with an explanation of words and expressions.

In Watch the Program you can find links for review and watch the programs that were actually broadcast.
The NEWS WEB EASY link takes you to news content in easy Japanese.

Learn Japanese expressions that come on the news while gathering information that can help you in your daily life in Japan.
