Japanese Dialects(方言学習)

Category

On this site you can learn about the dialects of 7 regions of Japan: Hokkaido, Sendai, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Hakata (There are 8 in the Japanese version). You can read simple explanations of the different grammar used in each case, practise and listen to spoken examples of dialects.

  • Real examples of various features of each dialect, such as the difference in expressions used at the end of sentences, are introduced.
  • You can practise converting standard Japanese into different dialects. It's pretty difficult!
  • On each page you can easily switch the display language between Japanese and English.
  • If you have the chance to take a trip somewhere, it'd be great fun to practise that region's dialect a little and then to try using it for real!

How to...

You can practise converting some text written in standard Japanese into a particular dialect.
On the English page, input the text using romaji. On the Japanese page, enter it in hiragana.
If you're able to convert it correctly, 'OK' will appear in red letters.

If there's something you don't understand, try reading the explanation on the screen again!
